3 Zen Quotes About Running
Updated: Apr 9, 2019
Lace up your running shoes – these words may move you.
Sometimes it's hard to put into words the feelings we experience as runners. Sometimes it's hard to explain to people why we run and why its essence is so meaningful to us.
Luckily, sometimes other people say it for us.
You can Google tons of great quotes about running. You'll have your favorites, of course, but below are 3 quotes that inspired me with their "Zenful" insight. They deepened my appreciation for the true nature of running. They gave me new perspective on myself and other runners. And perhaps most importantly, they prompted me to act. Together these 3 quotes form the philosophical backbone of the 5 Tribe™ 5K, a new race in May 2019.
1. "We were born to run; we were born because we run. We are all running people." – Christopher McDougall, 'Born to Run'
There's a great power inside you. And it's been there from the very beginning. In fact, when McDougall says 'we were born because we run,' he's talking about evolution – how humans evolved over 200,000 years ago to survive by running. More than any other animal, we are the species that adapted for loping over long distances. Did you know that a man can beat a horse in a marathon? That’s because all the parts in our bodies and brains were built to run for hours across endless African plains in ancient hunter tribes. We literally wouldn't exist as we do today if our ancestral genes hadn’t trained us to be runners.
Running allows you to reconnect to that original purpose inside you – a source of strength that's been largely lost in our busy modern lives. When you run, you connect to your amazing power. You become the hero you were meant to be.
In the 5 Tribe 5K, you're a part of a running tribe again. It fills the evolutionary need we all share – to feel that connection, the thrill, the fun of running alongside others in your Tribe toward a shared objective and the satisfaction of a communal victory.
2. "I often hear someone say, 'I'm not a real runner.' We are all runners, some just run faster than others. I've never met a fake runner." – Bart Yasso, Running Coach
Running is for everyone. You. Me. Everyone. No matter how fast or how slow you go, whether you arrive first or last across the finish line... YOU are a real runner.
That's why I started the 5 Tribe 5K. Because one day as I was busting my butt in a race, it occurred to me that, in most races, 95% of runners are excluded from the excitement of meaningful competition. I'm talking about the fun of feeling like you could actually win, not just playing along in someone else's game. For those runners, a race result can be personally meaningful but unrecognized in the outcome of the race. Like the middle-of-the-packer who beats his or her PR – or the Couch-to-5K runner taking a huge positive life-step, someone who has overcome insecurity and inertia and might finish last in the race but has still accomplished something truly remarkable. As those 95% of runners cross the finish line, they may feel inconsequential and forgotten, or worst of all, embarrassed. Just like Bart Yasso, I've heard too many runners say sheepishly, "I only ran <such-and-such time>" or "I know I'm slow..." as if they have to treat their achievement like an apology. Bummer!
The 5 Tribe 5K seeks to change that, by making every runner a key contributor in their Tribe's quest for victory. YOU have the power to win – no matter your speed or training level. Experience the wonder of running, the thrill of competing, the pride in your effort... and most importantly, the belief in yourself and others.
3. “The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.” – John Bingham, Famous Marathon Runner
It can be scary to start something new – whether you're running, racing, or contemplating just about anything else in life, from a new career path to a new relationship. New goals take courage. Staying at home, on the couch, safe under a blanket, is so much easier and so tempting. But let's face it... that's not the trail to your happiness, is it? Mine, neither. My self-challenge this year has been to "Dare Greatly", to not hold back in fear of failure.
The 5 Tribe 5K gives newer runners, trail runners, and first-time 5Kers built-in support and encouragement to make the "miracle" easier and friendlier. Your Tribe welcomes you at the start, cheers you to the finish. Experienced runners enjoy the race on a whole new level, connecting to bring out the best in everyone. It's a racewide celebration, an extra surge of motivation and support every step of the way on race day. Strength in togetherness.
So consider registering today for the 5 Tribe 5K. For all the reasons mentioned above, it's fun, affordable and a great new way to experience 5K. You can quote me on that!
Cheers and happy running,
